What happened
Google on August 19 announced Ask Gemini in Chat, describing it as a unified command line for work inside Google Chat. The assistant can search across a user's Workspace data, summarize busy conversation threads, generate and draft content, help manage tasks and calendar events, and organize work into sessions so users spend less time bouncing between tabs. Employees will reach it from a Shortcuts section in Chat's sidebar or with a keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+G on Windows and ChromeOS or Command+G on Mac. The rollout begins August 26 and can take up to 15 days to reach all customers. It is included with Business Standard and Plus and Enterprise Standard and Plus editions, plus the Google AI Pro for Education add-on. The feature only activates where administrators have enabled Gemini in Chat and Workspace Intelligence settings, and users must be enrolled in smart features. Google is also granting elevated usage limits through October 1 before standard caps apply.
Why it matters for your business
Many DMV small businesses already pay for Workspace Business Standard, which means this AI assistant arrives in your team chat within weeks at no extra cost. Used well, it is a genuine time-saver: catching up on a long thread, pulling a detail buried in Drive, or drafting a quick customer reply without leaving Chat. But it also deepens how much of your business data flows through AI features, and that deserves a deliberate decision rather than a default one.
What to do about it
- Check your Workspace edition; Business Starter does not get this, Standard and Plus do
- Decide as an owner whether to enable it, since admin settings for Gemini in Chat and Workspace Intelligence control the switch
- Set two or three ground rules for staff, such as verifying AI summaries before acting on client-facing details
- Revisit usage after the elevated limits end October 1 to see whether the standard caps fit how your team works
